How TVA EnergyRight Can Help Homeowners
TVA EnergyRight offers different programs based on the homeowner, property, and type of improvement being completed. Two options that may be available are Home Energy Rebates and the Home Uplift Program.
-
Home Energy Rebates: Eligible homeowners may receive a rebate after completing a qualifying home energy upgrade. The contractor submits the rebate to TVA EnergyRight after the work is finished.
-
Home Uplift: Income-qualified homeowners may be eligible for approved energy-efficiency improvements at no cost. Unlike a traditional rebate, Home Uplift generally pays for approved improvements through the program rather than reimbursing the homeowner afterward.
Program eligibility and availability can vary, so the right option depends on your home, local power company, and current TVA EnergyRight requirements.
TVA EnergyRight Home Energy Rebates
If your home energy upgrade qualifies for a TVA EnergyRight rebate, the process is designed to keep the next steps straightforward.
1. Your Contractor Submits the Rebate
After the qualifying upgrade is completed, your contractor has 30 days to submit the rebate to TVA EnergyRight for processing.
2. Claim Your Rebate
TVA EnergyRight will send you an email with a redemption code. Follow the instructions in the email to claim your rebate.
3. Receive Your Rebate
Once claimed, allow approximately 4 to 6 weeks for the rebate to be processed and delivered.
Some projects may also be selected for a free project inspection. If selected, a TVA-certified Home Energy Advisor will inspect the completed upgrade to confirm that it meets TVA EnergyRight project quality standards.
What Is TVA Home Uplift?
The TVA EnergyRight® Home Uplift Program is a partnership between the Tennessee Valley Authority, participating local power companies, qualified contractors, and community organizations. Its purpose is to help income-qualified homeowners reduce their energy burden through approved home energy-efficiency improvements.
Home Uplift is not a loan or a homeowner rebate. For eligible participants, approved improvements are typically provided at $0 cost to the homeowner, with TVA generally covering the cost of the work.
Who May Qualify for Home Uplift?
Home Uplift is intended for income-qualified homeowners whose homes are served by a participating TVA power company. Applicants generally must:
-
Own the home
-
Use it as their primary residence
-
Receive electricity from a participating TVA power company
-
Meet the program’s income requirements
Income guidelines can vary by local power company, and income verification is required. The program information notes that many participating utilities use approximately 80% of Area Median Income, or AMI, as a threshold, but this is not a universal requirement.
What Home Improvements May Be Covered?
Every Home Uplift property receives a home energy assessment first. TVA then determines which improvements are appropriate and cost-effective for the home, so the exact scope can vary from one property to another.
For HVAC and related home comfort systems, possible improvements may include:
-
Heat pump replacement
-
Central air replacement
-
Air handler replacement
-
Mini-split installation when appropriate
-
Heat strip upgrades
-
Thermostat replacement
-
Duct sealing, insulation, and minor repairs
-
Heat pump water heaters, depending on program rules and cost-effectiveness
Other approved work may include insulation, air sealing, ventilation improvements, LED lighting, and certain minor electrical, structural, or moisture repairs when they are necessary to complete the energy-efficiency upgrade.
How the Home Uplift Process Works
The Home Uplift process starts with eligibility and ends with a quality review of the completed work.
-
Check program and income eligibility. Confirm that your local power company participates and that you meet the applicable income requirements.
-
Apply and complete income verification. Submit the required application and supporting documentation.
-
Receive a home energy assessment. The home is evaluated to identify appropriate energy-efficiency improvements.
-
Approved work is assigned and completed. A scope of work is created, a qualified contractor is assigned, and the approved improvements are completed.
-
Quality assurance and energy tracking follow. The completed work is inspected, and the program tracks resulting energy savings.

FAQs About TVA EnergyRight
What is TVA EnergyRight?
TVA EnergyRight® is an energy-efficiency program from the Tennessee Valley Authority that works with local power companies, qualified contractors, and other partners to help homeowners make energy-saving improvements. Depending on the program and eligibility requirements, assistance may be available through rebates or the Home Uplift Program.
What is the difference between a TVA rebate and Home Uplift?
A TVA EnergyRight rebate provides money back after a qualifying home energy improvement is completed and the rebate is submitted. Home Uplift is different. It is an income-qualified program in which approved energy-efficiency improvements are generally paid for through the program rather than reimbursed to the homeowner afterward.
Is TVA Home Uplift really free?
For approved Home Uplift projects, qualifying homeowners typically pay $0 for the approved improvements. Eligibility, available upgrades, and program participation depend on the homeowner, property, local power company, and current program requirements.
Can Home Uplift replace an HVAC system?
Yes, HVAC replacement may be included when it is identified as an appropriate improvement during the home’s energy assessment. Possible upgrades include heat pump replacement, central air replacement, air handlers, mini-splits, heat strips, and thermostats. TVA determines which improvements are appropriate for each home.
How do I know if I qualify for Home Uplift?
Applicants generally must own and live in the home as their primary residence, receive electricity from a participating TVA power company, and meet applicable income requirements. Income limits and program availability can vary by local power company, so eligibility must be confirmed before work begins.
