AC Installation in DeSoto County

By the RW Heating, Air, Plumbing & Electrical Team · Reviewed by our licensed HVAC technicians · Serving DeSoto County since 1999

Spring is the sweet spot for replacing an aging air conditioner. The weather is mild, our schedule is open before the summer rush, and you get to make a calm, planned decision rather than a panicked one when the unit quits on a 100-degree July afternoon. If a new AC is on your radar this year, here is how to think it through.

Signs it is time to replace, not repair

A repair makes sense on a newer system. On an old one, you are usually just delaying the inevitable. Lean toward replacement when you see:

  • The unit is 10 to 15 years old or more.
  • It still uses R-22, which means it was built before 2010 and is expensive to service.
  • Repairs are stacking up, or the last one was a big one, like a compressor.
  • Energy bills keep climbing even though your habits have not changed.

A quick gut check we use is the $5,000 rule: multiply the repair cost by the unit’s age, and if you clear $5,000, replacement is usually the better option. Our repair team will tell you honestly which way to go.

What a right-sized installation involves

A good install is not just swapping a box. We size the system to your home with a load calculation, check that your ductwork can handle the airflow, and match the equipment to how you actually live. An oversized unit short-cycles and never pulls the humidity out of the air, which matters a lot in a Mississippi summer. See our AC installation page for the full process.

One thing that is new as of 2025: every new air conditioner and heat pump uses a lower-emission refrigerant such as R-454B or R-32 instead of the old R-410A, under the EPA’s refrigerant transition rules. Our crew is trained to install and handle the new systems safely.

Planning and cost

A budgeting note for this year: the federal energy-efficiency tax credits that used to offset a high-efficiency system expired on December 31, 2025, per ENERGY STAR, so plan around the real price rather than a credit that has ended. We do offer financing, and installing in the spring often means better availability than the middle of summer.

Common questions

How long does an AC installation take?

Most standard replacements are a one-day job. If we are also repairing ductwork or moving equipment, it can run a little longer, and we will tell you upfront.

What size AC do I need?

It depends on your home’s square footage, insulation, windows, and ductwork, which is why we run a load calculation rather than guessing. Bigger is not better. An oversized unit is less comfortable and less efficient.

Is spring really a better time to buy?

Usually, yes. Demand is lower than peak summer levels, so scheduling is easier, and you can replace on your terms rather than during a breakdown.
